Whitefield Academy is very excited about the Accelerated Reader Program. The students take a computer test at the beginning of the school year to find their comfortable reading range. On the spine of the library book used for the AR program, the students will find a purple dot, a reading level, and a point value. The students choose a book in their reading range and read the book. They sign up in their classroom or come to the library to take a computer test that evaluates their comprehension of the book. The students receive points for any test that they answer 60% or more of the questions correctly. The students receive the full point value listed on the spine of the book if all the questions are answered correctly. A portion of the points is awarded when incorrect answers are given. For each grade level, the following point goals have been set for every nine-week grading period:
- First Grade--6 points (optional)
- Second Grade--8 points
- Third Grade--10 points
- Fouth Grade--12 points
- Fifth Grade--13 points
- Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth Grades--15 points
AR grades are a part of the reading grade the students receive on their report card in second through eighth grade. Two AR grades, per nine-weeks, are averaged with the other classroom reading grades. The students will receive one grade for meeting the goal expectations for that grade level (see above) and one grade which is an average of their comprehension test scores. The student will keep a log of their AR reading and test scores for the nine weeks.
Reading List
The AR reading list contains all the AR quizzes that Whitefield Academy has purchased. The list is in alphabetical order by the title. Students should select books within their own reading range or slightly above or below.
Also, take note of the new column: Interest Column This column is based on the content of the book (UG:Upper Grades, MG:Middle Grades, LG: Lower Grades). Just because the book is within one's reading level, doesn't mean the content is appropriate for the reader.
